Library 2.0 - Some thoughts

I enjoyed learning all about some of the new technology. Some of it I will make use of - others probably not. I would like to establish a blog for Special Delivery with the help of my staff. Some of what we have learned will be included in it - podcasts, presentations, etc. I look forward to leaning more. You can teach an old librarian new tricks.

Digital Audio Books

I established a Net Library Account. I also downloaded the Overdrive Player on my home computer, and downloaded and checked out an audio book. I am listening to it right now. When I get my MP3 player, I will transfer it to that device. I can't wait.

Vintage Radio Podcasts

I went searching for podcasts and turned up one that has old time radio broadcasts. I listened to an Eddie Cantor show from 1949 featuring Dinah Shore. I added it to my bloglines. I had difficulty with this at work. I think it was because our Internet Explorer isn't up to date. The searching was interesting. If I couldn't think of a topic, I just scrolled down the subject list.

I'm Tubing!

I've been exploring some YouTube videos. I watched Franco Harris' immaculate reception in 1982 and some past performances of Dancing with the Stars alumni like Emmett Smith, Joey Fatone, and Mario Lopez. It was great seeing them again and comparing them to today's dancers. I could definitely see some uses for librarys. We could film some storytimes and post on our library's website. We could do some training videos of some of our databases and post for patrons especially students. I would like to see our TV ads incorporated onto our website.

Trying Picasa

I have downloaded Picasa into my home computer and I just love it. It is very easy to use and I am in the process of organizing and backing up all the photos I have been taking for the past three years.

PB Wikis

What a fun time I had. I added my blog to Favorates at Library 2.0. I even added my comments to Favorite Vacation Spots - Emerald Isle, NC, Favorite Books, and Favorite TV shows - Dancing with the Stars, of course.

Library Wikis

Wow - What a lot of information. I am really interested in the the wiki on Library Success. It has sections on all types of library services including services to Older Adults - right up my alley. I can't wait to explore it and add some to it some of my findings in recent years.

Web 2.0, Libraries, and Perspectives

I read all five of the perspectives, but the most thought-provoking one for me was the first one - on icebergs. While it is true that libraries cannot collect all materials, it will be quite a while until the "computer" will replace the book in all its formats. The older generation is not and will not be computer literate for quite a while, so we must continue "collecting" in all formats in the near future. Yes we cannot teach everyone how to use a computer, but we can do more training of "teachers". I also agree that we need to go to the public and not expect them to come to us. I serve the people who can't come to us - mostly the elderly. They are generally technologically illiterate and this probably will not change until the next generation - the boomers - get to where they physically can't come to the library.

Technorati

Technorati is very interesting. I tried searching for posts and blogs about the PA grand canyon and Emerald Isle, NC. There were no blogs about the first, but I did find some nice pictures. There are a few blogs about Emerald Isle and more photos as well. I don't know if this is something I will do more with, however.

Delicious

I did some exploration of this, but at this time, I don't think I can find a really good use for it. I did find a Library 2.0 site that looks intriguing.

Technology for Me

I have a digital camera and have been busy downloading and organizing pictures using the software provided. It has limited backup and sharing capabilities without purchasing the upgrade. This weekend I plan to explore google's free photo software called Picasa. With it I can backup, organized, and share all the photos I have been taking for the past three years.

7 1/2 Habits of Learning

Since I forgot to do a blog about this, I am doing so now. The easiest habit for me is viewing problems as challenges - thinking of new ways of doing things. The hardest for me is to take time to play. There seems to be no time at work and it's harder to find time at home when you have a house to keep up with and out-of-town family.

Look at the catalog card that I made!

Image Generator

I created this in one of the image generator tools. Isn't it pretty.

ImageChef.com - Custom comment codes for MySpace, Hi5, Friendster and more

RSS Feeds

I was able to complete this section, but I don't feel it would be of much value for me. Now my husband may want to do this because he is always reading on-line newspapers.

I really like Flickr. This was created from one of their tools. My niece was telling me about Picasa and I am going to download it to my home computer. I have lots of photos to organize.
